John Zorn – Filmworks XVIII

Ustad Zorn has done it again, with the latest installment to his Filmworks series, for Oren Rudavsky’s new romantic comedy “The Treatment”. Ok, I know you’re going “romantic comedy?!?!?”, well yeah it sounds strange yes, but Oren Rudavsky is a Jewish filmmaker, who has directed some nice titles like “Hasidism in America” and “Leopold Kozlowski, His Life and His Music“. So there’s the possible connection for you.

Now this album, I’m sure would shock the general public who has known Zorn from his more challenging stuff like Naked City and skipped the Masada stuff. This is in tune with the Masada stuff, very accessible and heartfelt instrumental music performed by a quartet consisting of bass, accordion, vibraphone and violin (played beautifully by Mark Feldman). As you’d expect to find in a romantic comedy flick, there are times when the music is moody with the coffee and cigarettes filter, and times where the sound is upbeat with the ongoing action. The unusual quartet selection fits the mood perfectly and I think this minimal approach is what has made this music extremely powerful.

This should be the final proof for anyone doubting Zorn’s genius and his ability to do to traditional music, this is as the official liner notes say “modern instrumental music at its creative best”, I have nothing more to add to that.

PS : sorry the image only has Feldman and Zorn, couldn’t find all musicians playing together!
