Bruce Haack - Captain Entropy
This was undoubtedly the happiest find i had for months. Theatrical (almost like a BBC drama) spoken-word nature documentaries all along tinny claviers, bluegrass melodies, soulful choruses and all sounding like it’s coming from your grandpa’s phonograph…
While at first i thought Bruce Haack was some wacky minimal musician’s moniker and this album was his idea of a 70’s joke, it really turned out to be an authentic electronic piece from ‘73. Haack (1931-1988), had been building his own electronic instruments since the 60s. He believed in the power of music to communicate with people, especially children and he produced educational records for kids, educational spoken word over electronic music, like Captain Entropy. Some of the lyrics are pretty funny and clever, not in the least “i can spell my own name” childish. I’ll definitely be hearing more from him.

There is even a movie about him which has become an official selection in many independent festivals with appearances by artist including Gary Moore! and Mouse on Mars.
