Gerry Hemingway Quartet – Rallier

We have been lacking on the avantjazz/freejazz front for some time although there are a few great albums we’ve picked up recently, and surprisingly they are not on Tzadik this time! :)

Gerry Hemingway Quartet’s latest album The Whimbler is on the Portuguese Clean Feed label that focus on creative jazz. Mr. Hemingway is a drummer and his Quartet has been around since 1977, although with changing musicians throughout time. The music is centered around his rhythmic grooves and freestyling although you can hear some incredible synchronization with the brass section throughout the album.

The thing with freejazz is, it’s rewarding music although not at the first listen like easier music. You just have to stick through the song to see the beauty, because most of the time, the untrained listener gets bored after a few seconds of undecipherable noise and strange time signatures.

Don’t do that ! listen to this track at least for a minute and get a taste of this magnificent freebop tune..
