Fat Freddy’s Drop - Roady
Fat Freddy’s Drop is a 7-piece band from NZ and what’s striking is I felt that before I found about it. The music is similar to Salmonella Dub’s sound and the line “do it for the love of music” popped the timeless Salmonella classic “Version” in my head.
Their 2005 release has claimed a huge local and worldwide success, and although I haven’t listened to it, this single gives me enough hints about it. Their digital dub groove sound is fresh, with great brass licks and vocals. Vocalist Joe Dukie is a familiar figure, he’s the one who did the vocals on Recloose’s incredible Dust track, which was featured here a few months ago.
Roady has an uplifting and laidback mood at the same time, with a great chorus and a great bridge at 2:55. Very urban and accessible, the b-side of this single has a broken-beat house remix by the Nextmen that’s equally good. Out on Sonar Kollektiv, so you know what to expect.
