amy denio – birthing chair blues

It’s taken me apx. 20 years of conscious music listening to hear a song from Amy Denio, and what’s ironic is it’s the opener of her debut solo album from 1991. This song is an instant classic for me, her voice and songwriting skills are terrific, and her sound is a very unique mixture of soo many different elements. Well then how on earth did it take me so long to get a hold of this lady’s album?!.

  • She is a composer, singer, multi-instrumentalist, audio engineer, international collaborator, and founder of her own record label & publishing company, Spoot Music. Her main instruments are voice, accordion, saxophones, clarinet, electric guitar, and bass.
  • She has 32 CD releases, and appears on several dozen audio compilations world-wide.
  • In 1997 she received the Bessie Award (NYC) for her soundtrack to David Dorfman Dance’s “Sky Down,
  • Her soundtrack for “Pangaea’s Brood” by Thomas Edward helped the film win “Best Animated Film” at the 1997 New York Underground Film Festival.
  • She has taught workshops on improvisation and composition in
Italy, Austria, Belgium and in the US.
  • Avid listeners should definitely notice the resemblance of the “hello, hello” part to the Nirvana classic “Smells like Teen Spirit”, which reminded me of a bootleg i had. So check out this song from Nirvana, apparently from one of their last shows, in Rome from 1994, (well, maybe not so rare, but who am I to know), and also these audio snippets of Kurt Cobain talking to the crowd from the same concert here and here..
